This 100-hour foundational training offers a comprehensive, evidence-informed introduction to the art and science of breathwork. Designed for those seeking to become breathwork facilitators—as well as individuals with a deep personal interest in the breath—this course blends theoretical learning, experiential practice, and reflective integration over a three-month period.
Attendance Options:
• In-Person Intensive and Online Format:
The course includes a 5-day in-person intensive, followed by a 3-day in-person module, with two months of online sessions (three evenings per week, 2 hours each). This format offers an immersive and hands-on experience, integrating personal practice, live learning, and teaching skills in a supportive, interactive environment.
• Fully Online Format:
For those unable to attend in person, the entire course is available online, with the same structure, content, and interactive online sessions, allowing you to engage with the material, practice, and discussions from the comfort of your home.
Course Content:
Drawing on both ancient traditions and modern physiological research, the training explores the breath as a tool for nervous system regulation, emotional processing, physical health, and personal transformation. You will develop a grounded understanding of respiratory anatomy, breathing mechanics, and the clinical relevance of functional versus dysfunctional breathing patterns.
Key areas of study include:
Breathwork theory: Begin by exploring the underlying theories that inform breathwork practice, bridging ancient wisdom and modern scientific understanding. This foundational knowledge will guide your exploration of breathwork as a tool for healing and transformation.
The history and rationale behind breathwork: Understand the origins and evolution of breathwork across different cultures, and gain insight into why breathwork practices have been integrated into modern wellness systems.
The anatomy and science of respiration: Dive into the details of respiratory anatomy, studying the structures involved in breathing and how they contribute to overall health. Learn the physiological principles that govern effective breathwork practice.
Inhalation and exhalation: physiology and function: Explore the rhythmic cycle of inhalation and exhalation, learning how these processes affect the body’s respiratory efficiency, and how they are key to breathwork practice.
The role of the breath in autonomic regulation and vagal tone: Delve into how breathwork influences the autonomic nervous system, particularly the impact of breath on vagal tone, and how this relates to stress reduction, emotional balance, and overall well-being.
The four diaphragms and their systemic impact: Study the interconnected role of the four diaphragms (respiratory, pelvic, oral, and cranial) and their influence on posture, movement, and overall health, especially in relation to breath mechanics.
Diaphragmatic and nasal breathing techniques: Learn foundational breathwork techniques, including diaphragmatic and nasal breathing, and how these practices regulate the nervous system, support physical health, and enhance emotional resilience.
Daily guided breathwork: Engage in daily guided breathwork sessions to strengthen your practice, deepen self-awareness, and cultivate a consistent approach to integrating breathwork into your life and teaching.
Breath assessment, testing, and pattern recognition: Develop the skills to assess and test breath patterns, and learn to identify both functional and dysfunctional breathing, enabling you to apply corrective techniques when needed.
Structured breathing protocols for various states and outcomes: Study evidence-based breathing protocols designed to produce specific outcomes, such as relaxation, focus, energy, and emotional balance, allowing you to customise your breathwork approach to different needs
Breathing-related health considerations: Learn about the health implications of breathwork, particularly when working with individuals who have respiratory conditions or other health concerns. This ensures safety and efficacy when guiding others.
Breath-led journaling and reflective integration: Incorporate breath-led journaling to reflect on your experiences, integrating insights from your personal practice into your learning and development as a facilitator.
Foundational teaching and facilitation skills: Finally, build the skills required to confidently teach breathwork to others, with a focus on communication, creating a safe space for students, and effectively guiding both individual and group sessions.
This course provides a solid platform for those wishing to guide others in breathwork, while also offering depth and rigour for those who are simply drawn to understanding and experiencing the breath more fully. Whether your path is personal or professional, The Foundations of Breath will support you in cultivating clarity, confidence, and embodiment in your relationship with breath.
